A bug’s life

A Bug’s Life

We all know that plastic waste and recycling is a huge problem faced all over the world that can be tricky business to keep on top of. However, scientists have come up with a novel solution that can help break down stubborn plastics and materials – in the form of bioengineered bugs. These tiny bugs effectively eat plastic, allowing us to fully recycle plastic bottles and the like. Do we think it’s the future, or do we think it’s fiction?

Answer: Future

That’s right, a bug’s life is… The future! Scientists in Japan have discovered and developed a super-enzyme from bacteria that have evolved to eat plastic, allowing for more effective and complete recycling. The super-enzymes can also break down thinks like cotton, which could allow for recycling of clothes and other materials as well.
